Dr Holt was born and raised in the Texas Hill Country. He received his undergraduate degree at The University of Texas at Austin in 2000 and graduated from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 2005. He completed family medicine residency in 2008 in Waco.

He joined the Fredericksburg Clinic in 2008 and continues to work there as a board-certified family medicine physician. He also began working in the field of addiction medicine in 2008 and became board-certified through the American Board of Addiction Medicine in 2014. He achieved board certification in the field of addiction medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine in 2023.

He has worked as the medical director of Warriors Heart in Bandera since 2018.

He began as medical director at New Choices Treatment Center in October 2023.
